Overhead Efficiency \u2014 The Foundation of Net Profit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most builders don\u2019t have a revenue problem \u2014 they have an overhead problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the problem isn\u2019t <em>how much<\/em> they\u2019re spending. It\u2019s <em>what they\u2019re getting for it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every dollar of overhead should generate <strong>gross profit<\/strong>. When it doesn\u2019t, it\u2019s dead weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve seen companies double their <strong>net profit<\/strong> just by tightening how they manage overhead.<br>No new hires, no new sales \u2014 just better discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how they do it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-audit-every-expense\"><a><\/a>Audit Every Expense<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pull your Chart of Accounts and go line by line.<br>Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can I renegotiate this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can it be automated or eliminated?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there measurable ROI from this cost?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t treat every expense the same. GP\/Week \u2014 The Speed of Profit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This one metric changes how your team thinks about time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gross Profit per Week (GP\/Week)<\/strong> measures not just how much you make, but <em>how fast<\/em> you make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started tracking this with our clients because it exposes inefficiency instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-formula\"><a><\/a>The Formula:<br><br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>Total Expected Gross Profit<\/strong><br><strong>GP\/Week = <\/strong>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Project Duration in Weeks<\/strong><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a job is expected to make $100,000 in GP over 20 weeks, that\u2019s $5,000 per week.<br>If it runs 25 weeks, GP\/Week drops to $4,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You didn\u2019t lose revenue \u2014 you lost <em>velocity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that slowdown has a real financial cost. Because while gross profit stays the same, your overhead doesn\u2019t stop ticking.&nbsp; Your overhead expense doesn\u2019t care whether or not your pipeline is full or empty.&nbsp; The market is replete with examples of companies nailing their gross profit targets on jobs, bonusing their staff to do so, but not hitting net profit numbers at the end of the year\u2026.this is because of schedule creep.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calculating GP \/ Week is the absolute best leading indicator KPI to understand when this situation is occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-it-matters\"><a><\/a>Why It Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you multiply GP\/Week across your entire pipeline, you start to see the truth:<br>your company\u2019s profit is capped not by <em>how many<\/em> projects you do, but by <em>how efficiently<\/em> you complete them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the construction version of \u201cturns\u201d in retail \u2014 the faster you move quality work through, the more profit your fixed overhead can support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-real-example\"><a><\/a>A Real Example<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We had two companies last year with almost identical numbers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both around $10\u201311M in revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both around 20% GP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both with $1.2M in overhead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first paid off its annual overhead in early August.<br>The second hit that point by mid-July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That three-week difference meant the second company spent an extra five and a half months in \u201cprofit mode\u201d \u2014 collecting GP that flowed straight to the bottom line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the power of GP\/Week.
